1999     Finding Stimulation in Choice

Work involving the influence of the viewer and the information exchanged
Solo Exhibition: Littlejohn Contemporary Gallery, New York, NY

Serenity, 1999
13.5 x 48.5 x 7 inches
glass, steel, rubber, sound, light
Detail from Serenity
Serenity continuously projects light down on the wall and up through the glass. Once viewer approaches the piece, a sensor picks up the motion and turns the white lights off and red LEDs on from underneath the glass directly below all the speakers. Simultaneously, the speaker above the glass earphones plays a 12-second excerpt by Vivaldi. The red lights stay on as long as the viewer is present. The piece resets 15 seconds after the viewer walks away from the sculpture.
Left Continuing, 1999
37 x 48 x 7 inches
Detail from Life Continuing
Left Continuing continuously projects light down the wall and up through the glass. Once the viewer presses a button, the white light turns off and the seven glass doorknobs light up red internally. Simultaneously a speaker plays a short classical excerpt of Vivaldi lasting about 10 seconds. After about 8 seconds of silence, the piece reactivates to the previous lit bottom, with the red lights off. The audio is generated from a digital chip.

Indeterminate Decision
, 2000
69 x 8 x 8.5 inches
glass, steel, rubber, sound, light
Indeterminate Decision continuously projects light up through speakers onto wall and glass doorknobs. Once the viewer presses the button, the white light turns off and the seven doorknobs light up red internally. Simultaneously, the speakers play a short classical segment of Vivaldi, lasting about 18 seconds.  After 8 more seconds, the red lights turn off and another white light is illuminated on the artwork.  This light then changes to red for the remainder of the sequence.  After a moment of silence, the sculpture resets to beginning.
Invalid Commitment, 1999
70 x 13 x 15 inches
glass, steel, rubber, light
Detail from Invalid Commitment
Invalid Commitment projects light up from bottom, onto the wall and glass doorknob for 34 seconds.  This light source turns off and a red light is projected down onto the blue mirror for 4 seconds.  The cycle is repeated continuously.
Particular Preference, 1998-1999
24 x 54 x 4 inches
glass, steel, light

In this exhibition, the artist utilizes light to intensify the emotional sensation which is present thoughout time.  We are bombarded by choices and are hindered by confrontations of our current emotions.  The work changes as one's emotions change with experiences.  Whether it is the presence of one's body, interrupting a sublime state, or a standardized oscillation of viewpoints as in Serenity, 1999.  Serenity constantly projects light down onto the wall and up through the glass.  A sensor detects an approaching viewer's motion and turns the white lights off and red LEDs on, from underneath the glass directly below all the speakers.  Simultaneously, the speaker above the glass earphones plays a 12-second classical excerpt by Antonio Vivaldi.  The red lights stay on as long as the viewer is near the artwork. The sculpture then resets 15 seconds after the viewer departs.
